Tiefhof Tiefhof

From old times

The origins of the Tief-Hof are not known to us. He was probably founded as Schweighof . Its proximity to the borders of Switzerland and Italy has significantly influenced the fate of the court. The gruff relationship of the Nauders to the Engadin in the 17th and 18th centuries was characterized by mutual robbery and arson. The high passage over the Schützenhütte past the yard was used by the Engadin and later by the French as a backdoor for the invasion of Nauders and thereby the Tief-Hof got its scars.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, one of the Nauders mines was operated not far above the Tief-Hof in the Mutzwiesen . Copper, pyrite, galena and Fahlerz were mined and delivered to processing at the low farm over to Sclamisot in the Engadin and later to Prad in Vinschgau. Border disputes in 1620 meant the end of the "Mutz copper mine".
The so-called "Knappenlöcher" - remnants of this mine are old, romantic witnesses from past times and leave the children's imagination unimaginable scope.

In 1931, the Tief-Hof came into the possession of the Fam. Jung and was then run as an inn with 12 guest beds. There were two room prices: large room ö.S. 1,90.-, small ö.S. 1,60.-. The wooden veranda with sun terrace at the low court was widely known. There were even outdoor dances.

In 1935, a fire broke out in the barn. The stable and farm buildings were completely destroyed, the house was badly damaged.

After the war, the heyday of smuggling:
Cattle to Italy, on the way back Polenta flour (= Turkish flour); Coffee, cigarettes and tobacco and saccharine from Switzerland. Many of these smuggling tours ran across the Tief-Hof, the last station for humans and animals, before the dangerous nocturnal walk across the border, where you could win a lot and lose everything.
Man and cattle were placed under the protection of Saint Martin, to whom the chapel at the low court is dedicated, and then they departed at night and fog. In the darkness of the Tieferwald, many fearful smugglers learned to fear and sometimes thought a squeaking pig was a ghost.
Healthy back then those adventurous smuggling stories were knitted, which are still told today.
In 1978, the house was completely separated from the barn and stables and the parents handed over the house and yard.
