Hiking and mountain tours

Heiligenblut and the upper Mölltal are the ideal tour area for hikers and mountaineers. The clear star of the region is, of course, the Grossglockner, with 3798 meters not only the highest mountain in the Hohe Tauern National Park, but also the whole of Austria. Nevertheless, Heiligenblut offers much more: Goldberg, Schober and some other mountain groups nearby present themselves with dozens of three-thousanders, glaciers, hundreds of mountain streams, significant waterfalls, crystal-clear mountain lakes, quaint alpine inns and managed Alpine club huts.

And Heiligenblut with the houses Thalbach is the perfect starting point for hikes and high tours in all difficulty classes - from simple alpine walks on medium-heavy hut tours to extreme rock and ice tours. By the way, some tours can also be done in winter as a ski tour.

We have compiled a small selection for you here. One more note: The following tour descriptions are suggestions, but no substitute for reasonable maps, tour books, hiking or mountain guides. We are here to help you - come to us. Needless to say, we would like to point out that the following tour suggestions are tips from our own mountain experience - all information therefore without guarantee of accuracy or completeness.

Easy walks

The following tour suggestions are suitable for all hikers - also for families with small children and seniors. You can set the pace yourself, nothing stands in the way of a family excursion, there is only such a great variety in the mountains. Here we go...

  • Gößnitz waterfall

The approximately ten kilometers long Gößnitztal is one of the most beautiful valleys in the region. And at the beginning, just behind the Heiligenblut district Winkl, the impressive Gößnitzfall rushes into the depths. Hikers can tackle the easy-to-walk and less difficult nature trail Gößnitzfall-Kachlmoor in 1.5 hours. Starting point Retschitzbrücke in Winkl or the direct hiking car park on Gößnitzfall. Alternative is the trail Natura Mystica, which leads past an old mill and the waterfall.

  • Wirtsbauernalm (1745 m)

Past the Gößnitzwasserfall, and after a short, somewhat sweaty steep step, you go a leisurely and only slightly ascending path to the Wirtsbauernalm in Gößnitztal. A total of 4 hours round trip.

  • Briccius Chapel (1629 m)

The starting point for this easy hike is the Kräuterwandstüberl in the Heiligenblut district of Winkl. In about 1.5 hours it goes from here to the small chapel, which has an important meaning for the Heiligenbluter: Allegedly, the holy Briccius, who is said to have transported an ampoule with the blood of Jesus, died here at this point. That's the legend, but at least it's the beautiful landscape with some variants in the descent.

  • Fleißkuchl (1798 m)

In the large Fleißtal is the very cozy managed alpine and ski lodge Fleißkuchl, which can even be reached by car. More beautiful and worthwhile, however, is the ascent over the Tümpfenweg, which can be mastered in 45 minutes. Starting point lower gold washing plant Heiligenblut.

  • Schareck (2600m) and Geotrail

Directly along the main Alpine ridge with a high alpine view - this is the Geotrail, a highly recommended around three-hour circular walk that requires surefootedness and a minimum of mountain experience. Then there is nothing to stop you: From the mountain station of the Heiligenblut-Schareck cable car, the well-marked geotrail leads over a well-exposed (but very wide) ridge, partly over steps, into the "Mausscharte" directly on the main Alpine ridge. From there, the trail retreats a little to the left in a wide arc back to the starting point. Good goers can still descend into the valley, either via a direct descent below the cable car or on the much nicer alternatives ( descent from Schareck, two variants ). Packing warm clothes: High up on the main ridge of the Alps, the weather can change very quickly.

  • Descent from the Schareck (2600m), two variants

The Heiligenblut cable car takes you in two stages to over 2600 meters with a beautiful view of the Großglockner and the Hochalpenstraße. From the mountain station you can choose several descents into the valley, two of which are particularly recommended: First, the direct path down to the Grosse Fleißtal, which leads over orchid-rich meadows, past the farm hut Sepp's Fleißkuchl and finally on the beautiful Tümpfenweg further down Heiligenblut leads (around 2.5 hours).

An at least as nice alternative, but steeper and less thoroughly recommended for completely inexperienced mountain goers: from the mountain station Schareck a piece along the Geotrail to the Mauskarscharte, then turn right until a sign in the Weißenseescharte the way to the Grosse Fleißtal and Heiligenblut points (3.5 hours).

Of course, both variants are also possible the other way around - from the valley upwards, then back with the cable car. This is certainly more exhausting, but much easier on the joints!
