The quite stretch of water is lined by a grassy bank dotted with ducks. Beyond the bank, as far as the eye can see, lies the low landscape of the Marshes-once a sea scape -drained by other ditches more like streams. In the far distance lie the low hills that used, long ago, to be cliffs. In the middle distance, and hard to see from here, is a sort of second horizon that runs right across the terrain- a narrow railway track. Because of the open flatness of the land, broken only by trees, the sky seems bigger, encircling even, adding to the sense of space.
