Martinvast Castle was severely damaged by Allied bombing during the 1939-1945 war. There remains today only the 11th century keep and a wing of the 16th century castle framing the 19th century castle whose dining room, which has a beautiful fireplace representing Noah's ark, remains to be restored. The pond of water lilies feeds the waterfall which flows into the English river guarded jealously by two black swans and which includes an island from which one enjoys a beautiful view of the castle. The nearby exotic garden has many flowering shrubs (rhododendrons, camellias, hydrangeas, etc.) as well as banana trees that grow sheltered from a collection of rare trees (redwoods, tsugas, avocarias, cedars). atlas and of Lebanon etc…) It is also decorated with some sculptures including a statue of a woman in Mucha marble as well as a pair of lions supporting two columns of Venetian origin. The large pond, with its two islands, is the refuge of many birds (white and black swans, green-necked ducks, guinea geese); it feeds two waterfalls on either side of the path leading to the valley pond.
